fluorocarbons - / ˌflʊroˈkɑːbənz / -
noun
Toxic 'forever chemicals' found in traditional ski and board waxes. Fluorocarbons are synthetic compounds are used to reduce friction and enhance speed on snow due to their water repellent properties. However, particularly in the case of per-fluorinated compounds (PFCs) they are toxic and environmentally persistent.
Wax on the bases of skis and snowboards gradually dissolve into the snowpack. These find their way into the freshwater ecosystem posing risks to wildlife and human health.
Fortunately excellent high performing fluorocarbon-free waxes are now readily available. These are mandatory in FIS alpine events and have proven to be equal in terms of performance to those containing fluorocarbons.
\\ I'm stoked that the big brands are catching up with 'Mountain Flow' & 'Purl', making waxes without those nasty fluorocarbons.
