DreamCELEBRATING INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN

Snips's Story

Name: Snips
Rider Type: Skier

1. Can you share your personal journey into free riding and what initially inspired you to explore the mountains?

My family loves freeriding, and so I’ve been in the mountains since I was a little kid. I fell in love with FreeRiding when I realised it gave me a special way to bond with my dad.

2. What does International Women's Day mean to you, and how does your passion for the mountains fit into that celebration?

International Women’s Day is a reminder that girls and women can achieve anything they set their minds to. My passion for the mountains fits perfectly into this celebration because freeriding and exploring nature shows strength, resilience, and confidence. Qualities I believe every girl should feel empowered to embrace. When I ride, I feel free and strong. I hope to inspire other young girls to chase their dreams, whether on the mountains or in any part of their lives.

3. Can you describe a memorable day or moment on the mountain that really captured the spirit of free riding for you?

When I was 7 or 8, I struggled with a mental block about skiing steeps. I used to freeze at the Combe de Saulire entrance, fear gripping me with sweaty palms, a racing heart, and tears in my eyes. I desperately wanted to ski it but felt stuck. The first time I confidently flowed through the entrance and down the first pitch, I felt an amazing breakthrough. That experience set me on a path of finding confident flow in my freeriding, whether in bumps, steeps, or powder.

4. Have you encountered any challenges as a woman enjoying free riding, and how have you learned or grown from those experiences?

I used to feel less capable than my brothers, which made me not want to ski with my family. But when I realised that my skiing ability was up to me, my whole mindset changed.

5. How has being part of the free riding community, whether locally or through FreeRide Republic, enriched your overall experience in the mountains?

Joining a freeride community has helped me find more opportunities to explore new terrain, both spontaneously and through planned trips. My family has many friends at our favourite resorts, which makes it easy for us to meet up and discover new lines they’ve found.

6. In your view, what unique contributions do recreational free riders bring to the mountain culture, especially for women?

Recreational freeriders, especially women, bring a fresh, fearless perspective to mountain culture. We challenge norms, push boundaries, and prove that women can handle the same terrain as men. Our contributions showcase strength, determination, and a love for adventure. By embracing the mountains, we inspire other women to take risks and carve their own paths, helping to create a more inclusive and diverse freeride community.

7. What advice would you give to women who are curious about free riding but might feel hesitant to give it a try?

If you’re curious about freeriding but feeling hesitant, my advice is to start small and build your confidence. Find a supportive community or a mentor who can guide you through the basics, and don’t be afraid to challenge yourself little by little. Embrace the fear because it’s part of the process, and remember that every skier, no matter their experience level, started somewhere. Trust yourself, have fun, and focus on the freedom the mountains offer!

8. How do you balance the thrill of free riding with the importance of staying safe on the mountain?

Before heading out on the mountain, I always make sure I’m wearing my transceiver and have packed my shovel, and probe (TSP). It’s second nature for me since I’ve been doing it forever, so it’s no big deal. I also have a backpack for my lunch, so carrying rescue gear doesn’t feel like a chore. Every season, my crew and I refresh our rescue skills. We check the avi report, weather, and plan ahead. I’m not into extreme thrills, so I usually prefer mellow lines, but I love steep bumps!

9. Who or what has been a significant source of support or inspiration on your free riding journey?

My dad has been a significant source of support and inspiration on my free riding journey. From the beginning, he has always encouraged me to push my limits and embrace the challenges of free riding. Whether it was helping me fine-tune my gear or giving me tips on technique, his guidance has been invaluable. He’s shared his own experiences and passion for the sport, which has motivated me to keep improving. His belief in my abilities has boosted my confidence and helped me overcome obstacles. Having him by my side throughout this journey has been a constant source of strength, and his influence continues to inspire me to achieve more in freeriding.

10. What does your ideal day on the mountains look like, and what keeps drawing you back to this lifestyle?

My ideal day on the mountain involves cruising around, feeling the fresh air and the rush of adrenaline as I glide through the snow. I imagine starting the day with clear skies, perfect snow conditions, and an empty slope. The freedom of riding down wide open trails and exploring hidden corners of the mountain gives me the feeling of exhilaration and a sense of peace. Sitting in the snow, sharing my pack lunch with my dad, soaking in the beauty of the mountains creates a moment of calm amidst the excitement of the day.
