Outside of marked pistes and trails but within ski area boundaries where ski lifts and emergency services are close at hand. Front-country is not groomed but is accessible via ski lifts, sometimes requiring short hikes or traverses. It is considered a middle ground between On-piste (or in-bounds) skiing, which is groomed and patrolled and 'Backcountry', which is completely outside ski area boundaries and un-patrolled, requiring full self-reliance and avalanche preparedness. Front-country can be the easiest way to access powder-filled glades, chutes, or bowls but while mitigation efforts may be in place in high-traffic areas, avalanche risk can still exist,
