I bought Black Diamond’s whippet attachment at the end of last season but didn’t put it to the test until this season. It’s now earned a permanent home in my backpack and I always use it when I’m boot packing into a line. Although BD are at pains not to call it an ice axe it does a very similar job in less consequential terrain. It fits on the end of BD compatible ski poles and is perfect when kicking in steps or booting, especially in icy or crusty snow.

I carry this whenever I’m hiking for lines. It takes up very little space alongside my harscheisen and toe crampons.
