Whilst I’m generally comfortable bootpacking into lines, I’m no mountaineer. So when things get super steep, icy or rocky I’m quickly out of my comfort zone. That’s where these lightweight but tough ‘toe’ crampons come in.
They mount effectively via tech inserts into any appropriate ski boot. All you need to do is tighten one thumb-screw and clip the restraining line onto the toe buckle and away you go. The thumb-screw can also be tightened using a flat head screw driver but as yet I’ve not found this to be necessary.
The amount of kit I carry day to day varies depending on my plans. One one thing however remains constant. I’m always near the limit of what I can fit in the pack I have on that particular day. These are much smaller than a full pair of crampons. They’re branded as the ‘Tech Crampon 250’ which refers to their combined weight in grams, so you barely notice them in your pack.
The overall construction feels bulletproof, however I did lose one the restraining clips on their second outing. That may say more about my knot skills than the clips themselves – nevertheless I replaced them with a pair of Mini Carabiner Clips from e-bay, which so far have stayed put below an Ashley stopper knot.
When I bought mine they were only available from proski and mountain service in the USA so I had to pay for international shipping but on reflection it was money well spent.
