Freeride Lab

Courchevel, France

powdabunga added intel 17 Dec 22
Area :Official FreeRide Area

Terrain : Front country

Access : Boot Pack / Skin

Predominant facing aspect : North East

Location :
There are 2 straightforward ways to gain access - both routes start from the Saulire, your decision point comes at the top of the Creux piste. Access via the Mottaret side is signed (riders right), the Courchevel route is not signed but is in the exact opposite direction to the signed route. In either case you can ride the first hundred or so metres, from then you need to decide whether to transition to skins or bootpack. Mottaret route: Definitely quicker if you transition to skins. Courchevel route: Transitions to skins is worthwhile if the snow is deep and no-one has kicked in a booter. (Transitions at https://what3words.com/variances.basecamp.disjointed)

Description:

The FreeRide Lab can be a great blast of FreeRide for a relatively short climb. Until 2017 this sector was served by the Creux Noirs chairlift, which topped out near the summit of Creux Noirs (2705m). When exiting the chair you could take a right turn onto a couple of groomed pistes. The choices were the ‘Red’ Creux Noirs and the ‘Red / Black’ Roches Grises. The lift stopped turning at the end of that season, a couple of years later this area was reimagined as the FreeRide Lab. Still with 2 marked pistes but now only groomed to give a solid base early season and thereafter left as FreeRide Terrain, since then they have been avalanche controlled and patrolled but only accessible through rider power.
