
If you want to access a line that isn’t lift served then you’re gonna have to switch from travelling downhill to uphill and that means skinning or bootpacking. This could be as easy as hiking a short distance from the top of a lift, to access a couloir or ridge. It could also mean traversing a ridge line to access side country or travelling in the backcountry.

In all cases the switch between uphill and downhill travel is known as the transition. You’ll find the more you explore FreeRide terrain, the more important this skill will become. Screw it up and you could see your gear blowing all over the mountain. Take too long and you potentially risk hypothermia as your body loses heat faster than it can produce it.
